The outer life is a manifestation of the growth that takes place on the inside. As Allan Ruffus said, “Your Inner Strength Is Your Outer Foundation.”. But To grow personally or spiritually does not mean by the spirit (or inner self) alone. It means both a person’s outer and inner life as well as the way he or she affects other people.
When a person grows spiritually on the inside, he or she becomes more self-confident, kinder, more positive, and more generous in their desire to help others. This outer manifestation then attracts back blessings or good things in their life.
To add peace and blessings to your life, here are a few steps you can take on your personal and spiritual growth journey:
If you have the tendency to be negative, to focus on what you don’t have (rather than being grateful for what you do have), to look out for number one (i.e. you!), or to be selfish, then you are not allowing good things to come into your life.
Take a few minutes out of every day to engage in the act of meditating or praying and thinking about what is good in your life. People call this having an ‘attitude of gratitude.’ Some find it helpful to keep a journal of all of the things in a day to be thankful for.
Step 2: Develop a Sense of Personal Introspection
This is a time of examining what you feel and think. Some people refer to this as self-examination. The purpose of this exercise is to focus on your thoughts and actions and see where changes need to be made.
For some, this step can be emotionally painful if there are situations in the past that have wounded them and found it necessary to bury these emotions deep inside themselves. Dragging around emotional baggage only wearies you. Deal with whatever has slowed you down personally and spiritually, release it and walk in freedom.
Step 3: Stop Running from Hard Situations
Whatever is in your life right now that’s causing you to feel a disconnect spiritually, deal with it. It won’t get better until you do. This might mean letting yourself deal with emotions (like grief or anger) that you’ve been pushing down for a while. Holding onto negative emotions can block your inner calm and stop you from achieving mental peace. The energy and the power are within reach if you want it.
Step 4: Personal Growth is a Step of Maturity
Develop the happiness habit, by always looking at the bright side of life and endeavoring to be happy. Happiness comes from within. Do not let your outer circumstances decide your happiness for you.
Staying on a path of personal and spiritual growth is not always easy. You may be looking for new strategies to keep you on this journey. Here are a few strategies for your personal and spiritual growth which you can begin putting in place on a daily basis…
Keep yourself Humble
Humility is vital to your growth. The minute you think you know everything, you have stopped your growth. Those that continue to grow personally and spiritually understand that there are many things they do not know.
Positive Thinking and Room for Improvement
Although the power of positive thinking can produce great results, it needs to be balanced so you are equipped to recognize areas requiring change and able to determine changes to make. We have the ability to direct our course. If we never make a mistake, it may mean we are not trying new things and challenging ourselves. Failure is one step toward getting it right if you are honest with yourself and try again. Go beyond positive thinking to recognize the negative things around you so that you can learn from them.
A Day in the Park
When we spend too much time at work, in front of the tv and on the computer, we become disconnected from nature. When you are out in nature, really enjoying the birds in the air or the bunny in the field, the line between what is important and what is not becoming very clear. Begin to spend more time outside, watch the program about dolphins instead of the primetime rerun, or read about the universe. You will be sure to find wonderful lessons to apply to your own development.
When you don’t eat right or exercise, you become out of shape. You begin to lack the physical energy, catch every cold and will be unable to give the attention you should to the tasks in your life. This can lead to low self-esteem. On the other hand, when your body is healthy, you have more energy to accomplish the things you want. It becomes easier to grow spiritually and personally because you have the energy.
Define your Purpose in Life
Although personal and spiritual growth is highly rewarding, you can also end up in a loop: personal development leads to more personal development, with no end purpose. Understanding what is important to you and what you want to accomplish in your life, will keep you from being swayed by other things that would stop your personal growth. The purpose gives you the energy and focuses to move forward even when things seem at an end.
It’s getting healing for your spirit – it’s bringing together again all of the pieces of you that were lost. It doesn’t matter whether they were taken by a difficult childhood, a heartbreaking relationship or stress overload. You can be whole again. It is within your reach.
